Spring 2006 Award Winners

Prof. Andy Watsky, from the Art History Department, received a scanner, portable hard drive and software, for building his collection of digital images.

"It has provided the hardware and software that I need to do what I need to do - without it, I would not be able to make the strides I am making in both my teaching and lecturing on my own research. In short, it has been fantastic.

Prof. Jennifer Church, from the Philosophy Department, received a MIDI keyboard and music notation software.

"I am planning a new course on the philosophy of music that will be offered in the spring of 2007.  It will be useful to have equipment that displays music in several forms, and enables us to manipulate music in a variety of ways. The equipment will be used to illustrate points in class and to design appropriate outside-of-class exercises."
Prof. Miranda Martinez, from the Sociology Department and the Latin American & Latino/a Studies Program, received two software applications for performing qualitative data analysis.

"QDA software assists in analysis of many different kinds of qualitative data, including data generated from interviews, focus groups, surveys, field observations, historical records, photos, paintings, and songs. I am pursuing two projects: one an interview-based update of my research on community gardens, and a second new project on consumer debt."

Prof. Brian Godfrey, from the Geography Department, received digital map files and graphics software.

"Thematic and general reference maps are constantly in demand by both scholars and students! At present I am working on a book project on Brazil, for which I will need to make various maps, and I expect to work on New York and possibly San Francisco in the future."
Prof. Yu Zhou, of the Geography Department, received a software application for performing qualitative data analysis.

"It will be used to analyze my research data, a good part of which are interviews.  I am also hoping to teach this software in my redesigned geography methods course...  My previous methods course concentrated on quantitative data analysis, such as statistics, and I thought that it might be helpful to add this qualitative package."
