Accessing Public Printers - Windows
Connecting to a Network Printer from a PC (XP)
What you will need:
- Administrative logon rights to the PC
- The network name of the printer
- The make and model of the printer (for example: Hewlet Packard Laserject 5000dtn)
- Click the "Start"button
- Select "Printers and Faxes"
- Click "Add a Printer"from the Printer Task menu in the left hand frame
- This will launch the "Add Printer Wizard"
- Click "Next"
- Select the "Local printer attached to this computer"
- Uncheck the "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
- Click "Next"
- From the "Select a Printer Port Window"select the "Create a new port:"
- From the "Type of port"pull down menu, select "Standard TCP/IP Port"
- Click "Next"
- From the "Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard"window, click "Next"
- From the "Add Port" window:
- In the Printer Name or IP Address field type the network name of the printer (for example: helpdesklaser.vassar.edu)
- The port name will fill in automatically
- Click "Next"
- Then click the "Finish"button
- The "Install Printer Software"window will open
- From the "Manufacturer"frame on the left, select the printers manufacturer (for example: Hewlett Packard will say "HP")
- From the "Printer"window on the right hand frame, select the model and Click "Next"

- In the "Name your Printer"window, type a name for the printer.
- Click "Next"
- In the Printer Sharing window, verify that the "Do not share this printer"is selected and Click "Next"again
- On the "Print Test Page"window, select yes or no to print the page.
- Click "Next"
- Then click the "Finish"button
Accessing Public Printers - Macintosh
To print to the public LaserWriter from your personal Mac, you must be connected to the campus network. If you are not connected to the campus network, please refer back to the network configuration section.
Macintosh OS X Tiger
- Open the Printer Setup Utility in your dock.

- Click the Add icon. For help, look at the screenshot below.

- In the Printer Browser window make sure to highlight the IP Printer icon and choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD for protocol. Then type the full printer address for address. For help, look at the screenshot below.
Once it finds the printer click Add.
Macintosh OS X
- Open the Print Center
- Applications, Utilities then Print Center
- Click Add Printer
- Set to LPR Printers using IP
- Type the DNS name into the LPR Printer's Address box for your dorm cluster printer.
- There is a sign above all dorm cluster printers with its name.

- Click Add
Macintosh OS 9.x
- Open Desktop Printer Utility

The program is located in the Utilities folder under Applications.

- Choose Printer (LPR) and click OK

- Under LPR Printer Selection click change

- Type the DNS name into the Printers Address box for your dorm cluster printer.
- There is a sign above all dorm cluster printers with its name.
- Click OK
- Click Create and Save to your Desktop
IMPORTANT: Before you print your document, either add a cover page with your name and ID number on it, or place it in the footer so that you can identify your work when you get it from the printer.
NOTE: It is always a good idea to purchase a disk-on-key from the computer store and save copy of your document on it in the event that you should need to edit and re-print your document.
