What is VPN?
A VPN enables connectivity to the Vassar College network, securely, from a remote location. VPN enable file sharing, server uploads and similar network services. In short, VPN will be used to support remote, protected access to the resources typically only available on campus.
Do I Need VPN?
Ask yourself the following questions:
If you answered YES to any of these questions, you need VPN. In the past, sFTP was possible from off-site. That is no longer the case unless you are connected via VPN. Currently, other third-party software products have been employed to gain access to network resources or emulate a users desktop computer. In the future, you will only be able to use such software after you are connected via VPN.
If you answered NO to all of the above questions or if none of this is pertinent to your work, then VPN will be of no use to you.
When Do I Use VPN?
VPN provides a secure gateway for you to access network resources typically only available to you on campus. Therefore, it only makes sense to connect to VPN if you need to access one of these resources and disconnect when your task is done.
What Rules Apply?
You must abide by the same rules as when you are on campus. This includes running current antivirus software and keeping your operating system up-to-date with all available security patches. Please see the Responsible Use Policy and Safe Computing section of the CIS web site.
