Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

Back-Up Your Data!

Experienced computer users know that there are two types of people: those who have already lost data and those who are going to experience the pain of losing data in the future. Back up small amounts of data on "removable media, i.e. memory stick, etc." and larger amounts on CDs. If you have access to a network, save copies of your data on another computer in the network.

  • Purchase an external USB 2.0 thumb drive and save copies of your important files. It's a worthwhile investment. Dedicate the drive to backup; don't use it for anything else.
  • If you can't back-up your entire system, identify what you absolutely can not afford to loose and back those files up regularly.
  • If using an email client, make sure you keep copies of your messages on the server. Server space is limited however, so be sure to practice regular house-keeping of your web mail account as well.
  • Keep a copy online. Back-up important files by putting copies in your VSpace. You can then access that copy from anywhere.
  • If you have a Mac with Leopard, Time Machine is the breakthrough automatic backup that’s built right into Mac OS X. It keeps an up-to-date copy of everything on your Mac. It's simple to set-up. All you need is an external hard drive to back up to.
  • If you have a PC, you can buy an automated back-up utility, such as Memeo to back up your entire system.
