Current Network Traffic at Vassar

Traffic flow chart

Chart of the traffic flowing into and out of Vassar in the past 24 hours.

How to read the chart

Time is along the horizontal-axis (x-axis, abscissa) and traffic is shown on the vertical axis (y-axis, ordinate). Inbound traffic is blue, outbound traffic is green. If you are on campus browsing web pages at another college, the request going from your computer to the Internet is outbound; the web page coming from the Internet to be displayed on your screen is inbound. The numbers along the bottom of the chart are the hour in the day in military time. For example, 16 is 4:00 PM.

What you can learn from the chart

The Vassar campus is attached to the Internet with connection that provides 200 Mbps (megabits per second) of bandwidth. Things to look for are whether we are at full capacity - blue or green high. We try to make bandwidth available to everyone equitably. However, when the connection to the Internet is approaching the capacity, you might experience slow downs. Look at the traffic over the past day. Are there times that traffic is low? If possible, schedule downloads and other heavy network uses for these low-use times.
