Harassing phone calls

Harassing phone calls are not common.  However, should this happen, proceed as follows:

  • Do not leave identifying information such as your name and phone number on your answering machine. Callers often use this information to continue the calls and pretend that they know you.
  • Do not engage in or encourage conversation.
  • Hang up on the caller.
  • Record a message: “I’m sorry we cannot come to the phone right now. We are receiving harassing calls and the phone company has a trace on this line.”

If the calls persist:
  • When the caller is on the line, say, “Operator, this is the call.” then hang up.
  • With the caller on the line depress the hook switch and dial * 2. This tags the call in the telephone system’s records.
  • Record the time and date of the call and report it to Campus Security ext. 5200/5221.
